Inducing serenity

Watched Serenity last evening, after seeing the overall rating on IMDb and reading one of the reviews. It was ultimately proved yet again how such ratings can be skewed on IMDb. For example, if you go and check a Harry Potter movie in its first week, you're pretty much going to get an overall rating of 8 or 9, because the folks who watched and reviewed it would be Potter-maniacs.

Anyway, getting back to the real topic of this post, I had no clue what the point of the movie was. I'd be thankful if anyone can explain. I waited and waited to see if something interesting was going to happen, in vain.

The story seems to have derived inspiration from The Matrix and Erin Brockovich among others, along with a psychic character and also some 'satirical' references to current anti-US sentiments. Does your head spin in the mix? Mine didn't really, as I was numbed by the lack of substance. There were about 4-5 short humourous moments and a couple of hot babes, who weren't really used.

Writer-director Joss Whedon was mentioned a lot both in the publicity material and the reviews. If you have no clue about him, like me, I warn you not to venture anywhere near this movie.

Watching Serenity without seeing the series 'Firefly' is like watching a Star Trek movie without knowing the series and the characters. There are 14 episodes of Firefly. The show was canceled because Joss Whedon (the writer behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and some very good X-Men comics and co-writer of Toy Story) made the show he wanted to make without following the rules of the studio. He had a contract after the success of Buffy and Angel which said he can make the third TV series like he wanted without the studio telling him the genre. He did so and the studio wasn't happy with the show... that is why the show which was a success by the audience was treaded like dirt... bad show times and so on. The pilot of the show which was not the first episode aired (think about this bad tactic the studio insisted on!). The show get more and more viewers each episode and then was canceled. The fans put a whole site in an issue of Variety and Joss made a movie with the characters to bring all to an end. The movie should work for people who did not know the show and it did I think. The writing was very good... much better than the last Star Wars movies. Show and movie have some kinda quality which is not often seen in TV and cinema. That is why I enjoyed both very much. If you haven't seen the show yet... rent the DVD box and watch the 14 episodes. They are great and too good for TV!
